As someone who works in academia, this time of year is usually a mix of trying desperately to relax and preparation for the next term. It looks like we have two or three weeks off but we only do in theory. Meetings will start again shortly after the first of the year. Students will be clamoring for course content and we will want to go back to sleep. Doing all of that while taking care of another human being, other than yourself, is a different kind of challenge.
Thanksgiving was our normal standoff of well we've eaten let's go shopping--nope. Christmas was great but I realized that was because I spent most of the day doing things I enjoy. I woke up and baked and made Belgian waffles until midday when I switched gears to make dinner. I gave mom her literally hard to find gifts and some other things she said she needed last minute. All was well until about 8 that night when she asked for a gift she can't actually describe well was.
She wants a heavy bedspread but not a comforter. Bedspreads tend to be thinner so this was feeling like one of those impossible tasks. She finally showed me something she wanted today but they are all super thin and have weird edges which she doesn't want. I finally asked the question I should have a week or so ago when this made the wish list: why do you want a bedspread and not a comforter. Well turns out mom has been pulling the dust ruffle from her bed every time she washes the comforter to wash it as well and is tired of doing that so she wants a bedspread to cover the entire bed. Y'all I think I've taken dust ruffles off once a year at best and when I was rotating comforters more I just left three or four on the bed and dropped the one that matched the current comforter. I can't buy her what she wants cause she's gonna complain about that but now she's going complain about not getting what she wants.
You're probably wondering about Bubba. Bubba is a brand of water bottles. I gave her mine a few years ago because it didn't work well for drinking at work. She mentioned a few days ago that it was leaking and I was like okay get her a new one and then use the lifetime warranty on the old one. Except she tossed it before she told me it was leaking ha. Well she's got new ones now.
